Panerai PAM00390 & WWII LEGEND LSA1607056 Strap by L´invitta Legione (Gallery)

By Erwan Grey

The evolution from Radiomir to Luminor is completed. The Second World War having drawn to a close, the Florentine company continues the technical research begun at the start of the war, culminating in the development of the Luminor, characterized by the crown-protecting bridge, with reinforced wire lugs created from the same block of steel as the case, the cushion-shaped case as in the Radiomir 1940 and the flat, wider bezel. Nowadays the models with this case are known as Luminor 1950. The PAM00390 is one celebration of the heritage in Firenze Panerai times. Wellcome to the history with this amazing combo.

FROM THE DEPHTS OF THE SEA (INTRODUCTION OF HIS HISTORY)

It was on a day sometime in March 1936 that the the Royal Italian Navy chose Officine Panerai’s Radiomir for the missions of its frogmencommandos. This new watch was the first professional military underwater watch in history. It combined water-resistance with another feature which made it truly unique in its field: the powerful luminosity in the dark, which meant that the dial was perfectly legible even in the most extreme underwater conditions in which the Italian frogmen operated. This watch is defined in military records as the “Radiomir”, a name identifying the model of the watch, but which was actually the original name of the self-luminous paste developed by Panerai to coat the figures and hands of its watches.

Yes, I am PANERISTI

DSCF2990

Some say that bad times for the mark … Right now I am in Asia, one of the continents where Panerai has gained more followers “active” (GTG, technical meetings, activities, etc) ahead. I was flabbergasted to see as a “general stampede” has made many “Paneristi” have started to dump their pieces; the reason? the drop in market prices according to your comments. Okay, I can understand given that the investment of a collector can be very large, but it is really a Paneristi who sells watches because they are devaluing? (if this is true).

In my opinion, NO.

Panerai PAM00508 Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Ceramic & Vintage Strap Nº 23 by Pirate’s Straps

By Erwan-Grey Photographer

© Erwan Grey All Rights Reserved

The handmaker Pirate´s Straps made this strap is based in a Vintage straps used at Marina Militare (frogman) number matching/given to one of the operative Black Seals who wore the watch during underwater SLC (Pig SUB) missions. The strap have two issues number “18” and number “23”. There are different theories about the numbering of these straps, but the most acceptable is the numeration of equipment of each diver in the Navy Frogmans. Probably the first number assigned to this strap was the number 18, you can see that it was made by hand, then after reassign the number 23 in a more serious way. What are the reasons for the renumbering of this strap? by the soldier’s death? for a mistake? it is unknown .. will be the mystery of this historic strap.

Go to see this strap in detail…
